Disturbed The Sound of Silence

The Sound of Silence

Disturbed The Sound of SilenceI almost didn’t watch this cover of The Sound of Silence because it seemed such a strange mix… Disturbed singing a Simon & Garfunkel song? Huh?

But, I did. And it was the best thing to happen to me all day. This performance moved me to the core.

After watching the video several times (there may have been tears… haha!), it made me realize 2 things…

First. The natural course of life inevitably leads to reinvention… if you let it. I have a habit of worrying about everything, and one of my biggest concerns is the future and what will happen when the things I’m doing now stop working. What will I do then?

Time will shape me, just like it shaped Disturbed and led them to create this beautiful arrangement… I never imagined this band would someday perform in this style and move me to tears.

Second. I need to listen to more music. I hadn’t felt this kind of comfort in a long time because I’ve been trying to write original music, and it’s going… well, not as great as I would like. I need to remember that music in general lifts me up. Other people’s music was what encouraged me to try to start writing my own, I can’t lock myself up in a cave and expect to weave songs out of uninspired silence and loneliness.

Thank you, Disturbed, for such a chilling performance. And thank you for reminding me to stop locking myself up in my own mind and heart.

It is amazing how a band like Disturbed can bring a classic song of the 60’s into the 21st century. David Draiman’s interview of this song is also a must listen,

It’s so cool that you like this cover, too. I did think for a second about covering the cover… hahaha! But I think their recording is so, soooo special that it makes me just want to enjoy it as it is and not try to rerecord it. 🙂

My mother had introduced me to this a few months ago. I loved it immediately. I’m a Kindergarten teacher and when my students are getting there things and getting in their places for their nap I played the Simon and Garfunkel version. After I was introduced to the Disturbed version I made the change and the kids loved it. It truly is a work of art. I still love the original too. Now I have two great versions to enjoy.

Rolled my eyes, when I heard the introduction on Sirius a while back. Then as Draiman started singing, I was brought back to the original, emotions and all. Very well done cover.

I need to stop being judgmental before knowing what I am even being judgmental about 🙂

Glad to know I wasn’t the only one skeptical. Don’t get me wrong, love Disturbed. Have the majority of their albums, especially the Immortalized album which this song is on. But knowing this was Simon and Garfunkel they were doing took me aback.

It is actually pretty incredible how a few of Disturbed’s songs that I know of are actually covers of other groups or artists. Like Land of Confusion. Till recently, I didn’t know that was a song sung by Phil Collins when he was still apart of Genesis.

If you are interested, this was an interview with the lead singer explaining a summary of him going in tackling the song.

Hi Judith, initially I just wanted to say thank for suggesting this surprising musical gem to us. Then I realized I want to tell you so much more.

I think you’re a very inspiring artist, and a beautiful person. I like your voice and covers so much, especially the ones from Skyrim and Mass Effect. But your collaboration with Peter Hollins on the song Baba Yetu really hit me at the core. Also when I let my mother hear it, she thought it was very special as well. I just created an account on LOUDR solely to be able to download the song in FLAC quality (i’m a bit of an audiophile). And listening to it on repeat for the last hour it keeps on giving me goosebumps all over my spine. Thank you for your amazing work.

I was wondering, are you planning to upload the ME and Skyrim songs in FLAC as well?

Hi, Gwylan! Thanks for such a beautiful message! And please say hello and thank you to you mom, too! I’m glad she liked Baba Yetu. 😀 I do hope to upload the rest of the covers on Loudr so they are available in FLAC quality. 😀

Many people don’t know this isn’t the first slow, emotional song like this Disturbed has done. Their first song like this was Darkness, hidden away at the end of their second album released back in 2002 and rarely performed live. David, the singer, said Darkness didn’t seem to be loved by most fans so they shied away from doing a piece like that for a while until this. I personally always adored Darkness as much as any of their other songs and was so ecstatic to hear David using his voice this way again. As a massive fan of both Disturbed and you Malukah, I’m so glad you liked it!

I just watched the link, and have to agree with Hennag. Though epic, the symphony’s version doesn’t sound as earthy & organic as yours. Sabina sings it beautifully, but YOUR voice and version are absolutely mesmerizing. I haven’t decided yet if you voice is that of a siren, an angel, or perhaps a bit of both.

Talking about the Skyrim cover link, not the S&G cover by Disturbed (which was beyond epic).
